Òran Mór Press Releases

Sunday Mail Pub of the Year 2011

Òran Mór has been named as the Sunday Mail Pub of the Year 2011 at the Dram Awards. Oran Mor saw off stiff competition from across the country to be awarded the famous Sunday Mail Mirror.

At the Dram Awards in Glasgow's Central Hotel, owner Colin Beattie said: "We certainly did not expect to win, especially when we saw the competition.

"But once we realised we had been nominated, we went all out to impress the judges. This is a great award for Oran Mor but it is not just for me or the staff, it is for all our customers as well. The shortlist was narrowed down to 12 pubs throughout Scotland, then whittled down to four after the Sunday Mail readers’ votes.

Susan Young, editor of The Dram magazine and organiser of the awards, said: "The thing about Oran Mor is you cannot imagine it not being there and yet it has only been open for seven years. It's become a Glasgow institution. It's got a brilliant atmosphere and is really welcoming to both locals and tourists. The service is fantastic and it has become a real part of the community. In short, it's just a great bar."

Owner Colin added: "What I really appreciate is being seen as a pub. Often we lose out in awards because we are seen as neither one thing nor another.

"But I appreciate this award because we are 100 per cent a bar."

Whisky Business

Òran Mór’s annual Whisky Awards continue to build on the success of the past two years, and 2010 was no exception.

The ceremony, now in its third year, was hosted by Andy Cameron and took place on 18th November in a packed Auditorium.

The awards recognise excellence in the whisky industry and were judged by a team of experts, including the Glasgow Whisky Club.

The categories and winners were as follows:

Blind Tasting - Talisker 10 Year Old
Whisky Rep of the Year - Linda Mitchell
Lifetime Achievement - David Urquhart (pictured)
Best Newcomer – (new whisky launched within last 12 months: Nov '09 - Nov '10) - Glenmorangie Astar
Best Overseas (includes Bourbon) - Four Roses Small Batch
People's choice Award - Jura Prophecy

Òran Mór General Manager Sandy Gourlay said: “We were delighted with the response and the night itself was a resounding success. I would like to thank everyone who attended, and we are already beginning to plan for 2011.”

Vows Award for Òran Mór Wedding Co-ordinator

Òran Mór Wedding Co-ordinator Louise Turner has been named Vows Wedding Venue Co-ordinator 2010 at a ceremony in Glasgow.

”I can’t believe it," said Louise, on accepting her award. "There was such stiff competition in my category: some great venues and great co-ordinators. I’ve been at Oran Mor since it opened six years' ago, and been the wedding co-ordinator for five years. But this is the first time we’ve entered the awards.
"I’ve brought Cameron McLachlan, our banqueting manager, along with me tonight, because I couldn’t have won this without him.”

Now in its sixth year, the VOWS AWARDS 2010 (Voted Outstanding Wedding Supplier) is a celebration of Scottish wedding companies offering the best possible service to couples planning their big day. All votes were cast either online or by post, by brides and grooms themselves, with the winners chosen from the shortlisted list of nominees by a panel of industry professionals – Kirsten Ferguson from Visit Scotland, Alan Gebbie of Investors in People, Stewart Roxburgh from Scottish Enterprise.

The ceremony was held at Glasgow's Hilton hotel on Monday 8th November.

Òran Mór named Scotland’s Best Unusual Venue

Òran Mór has beaten off stiff competition from both Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle to scoop Scotland’s Best Unusual Venue accolade at the annual Scottish Event Awards.

The awards, now in their second year, were held at Glasgow’s Hilton Hotel on Friday 11th September 2009, and judged by a prolific industry panel, including David Sharpe, Managing Director of the London Eye and Sue O’Gorman, Marketing Director at Davies Tanner.

The panel singled out Òran Mór as ‘a venue that seeks to be innovative and exciting in what is does, including its Play, Pie, and A Pint.’

“We are proud to be acknowledged in this way and believe that we truly are a unique Scottish venue,” said Òran Mór owner, Colin Beattie. “The contribution of Alasdair Gray and other artists, be they performing or visual, plus our Arts for All Program, will ensure Òran Mór’s legacy for generations to come.”

Scott Taylor, Chief Executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, commented, "Òran Mór richly deserves this accolade, as it is truly one of the unusual venues in Glasgow's crown. Colin Beattie and his team have created one of the most unique venues that visitors will ever experience and we warmly congratulate them."

Òran Mór hosts record-breaking Charity Fundraiser

The eighth annual St Patrick’s Day Charity Ball looks to have raised a staggering £140,000, making it the most successful fundraising night in the event’s history.

The Ball, sponsored by Tourism Ireland, took place on Saturday 13th March 2010 in our stunning Auditorium and was attended by the great and the good of Glasgow. Willie and Susan Haughey, of City Refrigeration, donated a massive £100,000, which will be split equally between the two main Glasgow charities: Mainstay Trust Limited and Hazelwood School.

The former supports people with a learning/physical disability, while Hazelwood is purpose built to meet the requirements of pupils with sensory and dual sensory impairment.

Donations will also be made to Able to Sail, Neil’s Wheels and Clyde Valley Beavers.

Among the auction prizes were a diamond and tourmaline ring and a painting by renowned Glasgow artist Bill Blackwood. One lucky guest also won a trip to Lough Erne Golf Resort in Enniskillen, with a further raffle prize of a trip to Cameron House on Loch Lomond also up for grabs.
